The parents in this story were either dead, lost, or broken. The parents were inadequate in raising their kids. The young adult characters had no parental guidance. They were left to defend for themselves. They learned at an early age how to cope with the responsibilities of working and managing a house. They did not get a chance to experience being young and innocent or to chase their dreams. Life happened and they learned to deal with the consequences. The parents in this story failed at being parents and left their children to suffer and attempt at life with no guidance leaving them lost and broken.
The stories told in alternating POV's between Sammy and River. Sammy and River are neighbors. Sammy is friends with River's brother Blaydon. Sammy was waiting to claim River when she turned sixteen. On her sixteenth birthday nothing turned out how River had planned it.
Sammy is back after having been gone four years. Sammy's mission is to unbreak River and figure out why she chose Danny over him.
Broken should be separated into two parts because the first half is about River reclaiming her love for Sammy. The second part is about figuring out how to deal with Danny.
I enjoyed the chemistry between Sammy and River however I did not feel as if these characters were broken in the true sense of the word. Yes they suffered a disadvantage for having inadequate parents but other than that none seemed to act in a manner that stated broken. Even with Blaydon taking antidepressants he still managed to go to work. Blaydon appeared unstable and too dependent on the drugs. I would not blame his addiction on being broken. I'd say Blaydon was more lost and misguided in life. Even with River being with Danny who is physically demanding she continued to work and maintain a sexual relationship with no trauma. Even with Sammy having a whore for a mother he worked, got a degree, and took care of his younger brother. With broken parents these young adults managed to pull their weight in responsibility and looked after each other.
The stories not so much about Sammy, River, or Blaydon being broken to the point of unfixable it's more about rising above the challenges of having broken parents.
Danny was manipulating and blackmailing River since she was sixteen. River felt indebted to Danny. Danny took advance of Rivers family dynamic. Danny definitely was broken and even psychotic.

The Broken edition by Ker Dukey Romance eBooks Reviews

- [x] My Torin
As I sit here clutching my tissues all I can say is that this book is everything! Sweet, heartbreaking, beautiful, soulful, perfect. From the moment Casey is born she was thrown away only to be put in the system. She cannot wait to turn 18 and finally be free. When a handsome stranger, Tyler, shows up asking to pay her guardian off so he can bring her to his home to live with his brother, Torin, and himself she agrees. Will she find herself? What are the truths of her past? What is Tyler’s true motive for bringing Casey into their lives? Sometimes it’s easy to judge others but to truly know someone you need to look on the inside. Not everything is in black and white. You never know what someone is going through behind their mask. Told in multiple POV
Ker Dukey has my mind and soul captivated with each chapter. River, her brother Blaydon, and their neighbor Sammy have horrid parents so they all stick together. Sammy goes off to college and takes River's heart with him, but River tore out Sammy's heart when she ended up with Danny, another friend of theirs. What Sammy doesn't know is that River has always only loved him. Danny is controlling and abusive, but River stays with him out of fear for her brother and what would happen to him if Danny ever went to the police. You will not believe what happens,so you must read to find out. You will laugh, cry, and feel like your heart is being ripped out, but you will love every second. I know I did. Off to read another Ker Dukey book.
WTF?? Seriously? I wish someone would slap this author upside the head for that ending.

I seriously can't believe the book ended like that. If someone told me the publisher accidently published the wrong ending, I would totally believe that. I mean WTF? I don't even know how to rate this one.

You know how sometimes you read a book and you just know it's going to get mixed reviews. Others will love it while others will hate it. That's how I felt about this one. The story was actually okay for me and I had planned on rating it as a 3+ STAR read. Total guilty pleasure read. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon. But the very last page was just plain stupid. Totally. And while I hate to rate a whole book based on an ending I didn't like, the last 8 sentences were so conductive to major eye rolling that it's the only thing I can think about when writing this review. I mean come on? Seriously? Urgh!

I'll leave this one at 3 stars because I'm not sure it's fair to rate the book lower due to one page I didn't like. It's unfortunate that when I think back about this book, that ending, which was totally unnecessary and pointless, is all I'll remember.
